It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas

The tree is up. I made hot chocolate from scratch last night (complete with marshmallows!). The Christmas shopping is almost finished. And I'm finally spending quality time with some much missed friends. It's the holidays, and I love it. Hope y'all are enjoying the holiday season!

It's a Marshmallow World in My Kitchen

I have a serious marshmallow obsession. My mom sends me peeps every holiday. I eat marshmallow fluff out of a jar. I once ~~harassed~~ politely asked the former CEO of Just Born to send me a box of peeps (which only goes to show you never know who you'll sit next to at a concert--and yes, he sent me a box because he's awesome. Thanks!). The only logical next step in my marshmallow love-story would be to make my own.

I heard homemade marshmallows were fluffy, and delicious, and a million times better than store-bought. Is that even possible? Marshmallows can taste better?! My mind pondered and I researched. And researched some more. After finally settling on Alton Brown's highly-rated marshmallow recipe, I took the plunge and made my own marshmallows. And what a marshmallow world my kitchen turned into.

With a little bit of patience, a candy thermometer, and an electric mixer (no, you do not need a stand mixer as most recipes require), homemade marshmallows are totally attainable! And majorly delicious.

Alton Brown's Marshmallows (via FoodNetwork.com)

    3 packages unflavored gelatin
    1 cup ice cold water, divided
    12 ounces granulated sugar, approximately 1 1/2 cups
    1 cup light corn syrup
    1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    1/4 cup confectioners' sugar
    1/4 cup cornstarch
    Nonstick spray

Place the gelatin into the bowl of a mixer along with 1/2 cup of the water. Have the whisk attachment standing by.

In a small saucepan combine the remaining 1/2 cup water, granulated sugar, corn syrup and salt. Place over medium high heat, cover and allow to cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Uncover, clip a candy thermometer onto the side of the pan and continue to cook until the mixture reaches 240 degrees F, approximately 7 to 8 minutes. Once the mixture reaches this temperature, immediately remove from the heat.

Turn the mixer on low speed and, while running, slowly pour the sugar syrup down the side of the bowl into the gelatin mixture. Once you have added all of the syrup, increase the speed to high. Continue to whip until the mixture becomes very thick and is lukewarm, approximately 12 to 15 minutes. Add the vanilla during the last minute of whipping. While the mixture is whipping prepare the pans as follows.

Combine the confectioners' sugar and cornstarch in a small bowl. Lightly spray a 13 by 9-inch metal baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Add the sugar and cornstarch mixture and move around to completely coat the bottom and sides of the pan. Return the remaining mixture to the bowl for later use.

When ready, pour the mixture into the prepared pan, using a lightly oiled spatula for spreading evenly into the pan. Dust the top with enough of the remaining sugar and cornstarch mixture to lightly cover. Reserve the rest for later. Allow the marshmallows to sit uncovered for at least 4 hours and up to overnight.

Turn the marshmallows out onto a cutting board and cut into 1-inch squares using a pizza wheel dusted with the confectioners' sugar mixture. Once cut, lightly dust all sides of each marshmallow with the remaining mixture, using additional if necessary. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.

Homemade Caramel Corn

When someone says caramel corn, what do you think about? Christmas tins with four flavors of popcorn? Cone-shaped bags with red bows at the summer country fair? Or possibly the thought "How many miles of running will cancel out this entire bag of caramel corn?"

All three thoughts swirled in my head tonight as I popped, boiled, and baked my first homemade batch of caramel corn. I didn't actually think caramel corn could get better than it does in those Christmas tins, but trust me on this one...it does. Caramel corn is also surprisingly easy to make. (Take it from the girl who's a little gun-shy about cooking her own caramel as the first caramel I ever made was more like a jawbreaker). You probably already have the ingredients in your cabinet already. So go ahead. Face your caramel-making fears and bring back your childhood with homemade caramel corn.

Caramel Corn in 5 Easy Steps
Here's the recipe I followed, minus the spicy stuff. I also added white chocolate chips, but I imagine any cut up candy would be delicious.

1. Pop your corn!

2. Simmer your caramel sauce

3. Pour sauce over popcorn and bake for an hour. Stir every 15 minutes.

4. Dance around your kitchen in your post-yoga clothing, eating pickles and belting out James Morrison's "Won't Let You Go." (This step is completely optional.)

5. Package your caramel corn in cute, airtight bags or mason jars as gifts (or else you'll eat it all yourself. Trust me on this.)

Do you know what I do on my friday nights? Go out with friends? Celebrate an exhausting and exhilarating week?

No. I do laundry. And clean my bathroom. And organize my tupperware shelf.

Oh, and bake doughnut muffins.

Doughnut wha?? I know. I just blew your mind. And trust me, once you make these little morsels of soft, buttery, sugary and a cinnamony* goodness, you will wonder how on earth a muffin can be a doughnut. (Or is it a doughnut a muffin?) But it doesn't matter how two delicious things can exist as one, because they're just that good. And they're a good friday night activity for those of you who also enjoy organizing tupperware, and other such exciting household chores.

I don't know why I have a sudden obsession with leopard, but lately I've been feeling like leopard print accessories are the perfect touches to transition into fall. Specifically leopard print flats. And which flats did I fall in love with?

I didn't believe in love at first sight until I logged onto J.Crew's website this morning and saw their new arrival, the Vintage Tweed Jacket. I'm still not ready for autumn, but this jacket is definitely making me think cooler weather might not be such a bad thing, especially if I have such a beautiful jacket to keep me warm. This could be a fall splurge, because a beauty like that doesn't make it to the sale rack.

I visited my parents a few weeks ago, and they surprised me with tickets to Maroon 5 at Musikfest. The old steel mills at Bethlehem Steel made for a eerie, but gorgeous backdrop for the new concert venue.

The boyfriend and I spent my 27th birthday at the Steve Miller Band concert at Wolftrap, complete with a picnic dinner and lawn seats!

I cheered on the home team twice in the same week.

Between birthdays, babies (not mine!!!), and new opportunities, I've have my fair share of sweet treats. I made these red velvet cupcakes for a co-worker's last day in the office.

Green Goddess Dressing

Have you ever tried Green Goddess Dressing? You haven't? You are missing out, my friends.

You need to get yourself into your kitchen and chop, dice, and whisk. 'Cuz it requires a little bit of that. But it's totally worth the mess.

Green Goddess Dressing is the distant cousin of ranch dressing and it pretty much tastes delicious with everything. Dip a baby carrot, spread it on a sandwich, or do what you're supposed to do with salad dressing--put it on a salad! It's fresh and complex. You'll want to lick the spoon. We won't talk about whether I did or not.

Green Goddess Dressing
(Kinda based on the recipe from Life's Ambrosia)

1 cup plain yogurt
3/4 mayonnaise
chopped cilantro
chopped parsley
chopped basil
chopped tarragon leaves
splash of red wine vinegar
slightly bigger splash of olive oil
juice of half a lemon + zest
salt and pepper to taste

I apologize. I don't really like to measure my herbs. It's more of a taste as you go process for me (using carrots as the tasting vehicle). Chop all the herbs super fine and whisk the rest of it together. I imagine this would be much easier in the food processor.

Strawberry Freezer Jam

There are things in life I never imagined myself doing.

Like being able to parallel park like a pro. But working in an urban area has taught me to squeeze my Nissan Altima in parking spots I never thought it would fit.

Or running a half marathon, let alone a full. I've run two halfs, and I'm signed up for Marine Corps and in full pre-training swing. Crazy right?

I also never thought I'd catch myself using a mason jar for anything but drinking lemonade. And yet, I just made freezer jam.

Call me a grandma (like the guy in the checkout line in Wegmans called last night). Or just call me awesomely accomplished. That's how I like to think of it. I can parallel park, run really far, and make freezer jam. You should all feel lucky to be my friends/readers.

I'd give you the recipe for the strawberry freezer jam, but it's easiest to just follow the direction on the pectin box.

If you decide to add "making freezer jam" to your bucket list, I have just two tips:

1. I discovered pectin specifically for freezer jam. I suggest you use that, as I had a mishap with regular pectin. But who knows, you might be much more talented than I am.
2. The recipe makes more than specified. (Which I find happens a lot when I make things. Coincidence?)

The Gallery Wall, Finally.

There's nothing like an impending visit from your parents that will send you into a frenzy to complete unfinished projects in your apartment. Case in point: the gallery wall I've been meaning to finish and hang for the past...year.

Sorry about the crappy photo. I'm much too lazy to take a nicer one.

It's definitely not as much of a "gallery" as I hoped, but I'll blame that on lack of wall space and the fact that half of my wall is hidden behind another wall. But it's hung now. I'm kinda proud of it and it makes me super happy. I used Wal-Mart frames and Command photo hangers as to not damage my rented walls. The best part is most of the prints I found on Etsy for super cheap prices, so when I feel like changing the prints in a month (because that's about how long I can live with things), I won't feel bad about the price!

Thanks to my mom for visiting! She should visit more often. Maybe then I would frame the sad photos in my bedroom and re-finish my desk.

I'll admit, while I live in the middle of a great boutique district I rarely make it to any of the boutiques except when I'm looking for something special. Or when I feel like leaving my warm, cocoon of an apartment (which these days isn't often--thank you winter).

However, this weekend Alexandria is hosting its boutique warehouse sale. And with Tory Burch boots at $30, I could be convinced to bundle up and check it out. If you're in the Alexandria, VA area and need something to do this weekend, I urge you to stroll around Old Town. I mean, if it gets too cold you can always scamper into Union Street and warm up with a few beers and a big steaming bowl of their delicious gumbo.

Diaper Cakes and Cupcakes

If you're wondering what a diaper cake is, rest assured, it has little to do with its confectionery cousin the layer cake, save for the layers. A diaper cake is a tower of rolled up diapers made to look like an actual cake and given as a gift at a baby shower.

Can you guess where I'm going with this? Yep, my office has caught baby fever and we're hosting yet another baby shower, this time with a jungle theme. Having never touched a diaper in my life (except possibly when my brother was born, but I would've been four and too young to remember), I volunteered to create the jungle-inspired diaper cake.

Here's the result:

Not bad for a first-timer, right? The panda is my favorite part. It's a "blanket buddy"--a stuffed animal holding a blanket. So cute.

And a party wouldn't be a party without an actual cake. Using the recipe from Brown Eyed Baker I whipped up a batch of mini dark chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting.

They're bite-sized, rich little morsels of chocolate and peanut butter, and just as fun to eat as they were to make.

I'm completely swept up in the details of the royal wedding, especially what Kate Middleton's dress will look like. WWD.com featured 30 designers sketches of what they'd like to see Kate Middleton wearing as her wedding gown. I'm sure whatever gown Kate Middleton decides on will be gorgeous and sketched into the books of history.

It's hard to pick a favorite, as there are so many different but beautiful gowns, but I love Nannette Lepore's take on the dress. Lots of layers, and lace and drama. Gorgeous!

I know wrapping paper is something that you tear off a present in five seconds or less, but every year I still can't help but spend a little extra time wrapping, tying ribbons and bows, and personalizing each gift.

Nut Cups (My Calling in Life)

There comes in a time in everyone's life when the angels sing and you realize your life calling. Mine is making nut cups (also known as nut tassies or mini pecan tarts).

Okay, nut cups are not my life calling, but I'm pretty darn good at making those tedious little Christmas cookies. In fact, I just finished my Christmas batch this year in time for the office holiday bake-off.

And just to make sure they're up to par, I'm currently enjoying a few with a mug of hot gluhwein (and using my cute little napkins--which were supposed to be for tomorrow's soiree, but oh well!)

Nut Cups (Mini Pecan Tarts, Nut Tassies)

The recipe is one that my mom gave me. I'm not sure where she got the original, but I do know this is the same recipe she's used for years.

The Dough

4 cups flour

1 pound sweet (unsalted) butter

12 ounces cream cheese

Mix together and chill overnight.

Tart filling

4 eggs

3 cups brown sugar

4 tablespoons butter

half tsp vanilla

1 pound pecans

dash of salt

Roll out the dough and use a cookie cutter (or a glass, like I do) to make 2 inch circles (or something like that). Fit the circles into mini muffin tins and fill each shell with 3/4 of the tart filling. Bake for 15-20 minutes (my oven is old and my cookies only take 11 minutes) until light golden brown. I add a pecan to the top of each tart before baking for decoration. Be sure to not overfill these cookies or else they'll puff up and you'll have tart filling all over the place. Baker beware, the full recipe makes about 80 little tarts.

'Tis the Season

It's totally the holiday season. My refrigerator is filled with unsalted butter, cookie dough, cheese (I found the two pounds I lost in September!); my cabinets are brimming with different kinds of nuts, chocolate, sugars, and more chocolate; my freezer is packed with cookies waiting to be gobbled up; and I'm continually covered in pieces of cookie dough and powdered sugar. If you were waiting for me to break into some kind of confectionery rhyme there, a la The Night Before Christmas you, my friend, will be waiting a long time.

I knew I was losing it tonight when I stood in butter section of Wegmans mulling over how many boxes of unsalted butter I would need for the baking extravaganza that has taken over my life (just for the record, there are still nut cups, meringues, chocolate turtle cookies, and a second batch chocolate chips cookie to be made).

I ended up with only one box of butter and these freaking adorbs napkins. (Plus $45 worth of pecans and paper plates for the little holiday get together I'm hosting in my 437 square foot apartment. If you're wondering how I can spend $45 on holiday napkins, then we're both wondering the same thing.)

Day Off

Having a day off the middle of the hectic holiday season is completely refreshing. I'm spending my time sipping tea and getting a head start on holiday baking.

In case you're wondering, the cookies are chocolate crinkles from a recipe my co-worker gave me a few months back. The original recipe is from the magazine Family Fun, but I made a few adjustments.

Chocolate Crinkles

3/4 cup butter, melted
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
confectioner's sugar

Mix together the butter, sugar and cocoa powder. Add the eggs and vanilla. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Once combined, refrigerate for 2-4 hours.

Turn on the oven to 350 degrees. Roll dough into small balls and then roll in confectioners sugar. Bake for 7-10 minutes. Makes 40-50 cookies.

You know a cookbook is good when you fall asleep in bed reading it. I picked up Sophie Dahl's Miss Dahl's Voluptuous Delights a few days ago and have not put it down since. That's not something I would normally say about a cookbook. Honestly, when's the last time you read the Joy of Cooking from front to back while falling asleep?

But this is no ordinary cookbook. Sophie takes you on a journey through her life, which has always been filled with food. The book is split into seasons, and then by meal, which is exactly how I cook. And she begins the book with my favorite season: Autumn.

I cannot wait to start cooking some of her simple, yet delicious looking recipes. Since it's the holiday season this book make a fantastic gift any food-lover you know, or yourself.

Making Whoopie (Happy Thanksgiving)

We made whoopie at my parent's house last night in preparation for Thanksgiving. Whoopie pies, that is.

They're easier than pie to make. It's as easy as one (bake a the cookies. I used this pumpkin cookie recipe.), two (mix the cream cheese frosting), three (wait for the cookies to cool, plop on cream cheese frosting, and add the other cookie). Refrigerate and enjoy.

It would be a slight understatement to say that I am completely enamored with everything on Bakerella’s yummy web site.

Okay, maybe a giant understatement. I want to go on a baking frenzy and bake every little morsel on her web site. And then feed it all to my co-workers because heck I can’t eat 50 cake balls by myself. (I mean, who am I kidding? I could totally put back 50 cake balls, but what would that do to a person? Probably not something I want to find out.)

Speaking of cake balls, I decided to try my hand out at the little balls of heaven using seasonal flavors.

The Great Boot Hunt

I'm usually spot-on when it comes to online purchases, except for the past few weeks when I've had a run of "what was I thinking?" and thus I have about 80 returns to make this weekend!

That run of bad luck also happened to encompass my boot search, or as I call it now The Great Boot Hunt. As I mentioned, my beloved dark brown riding boots with the perfect slouch and adorably understated buckle decided to breathe their last breath of air a few weeks ago, leaving me with no choice but to replace them.

And so I began with the Tierney boots from Nine West.

So cute but alas, they were not tall enough. Maybe I should have read the description?

And then I discovered the Franco Sarto Rider boots at Piperlime. Love at first sight!

...But too big. I decided to take to the streets and spent a day trying on almost every pair of boots at Macy's and Nordstrom with no luck.

Is this beginning to sound like the story of Goldilocks, or it just me?

And so, after a day of exhausting boot shopping and slight pushy sales people, I signed back onto Piperlime and bought the Franco Sarto in a half size smaller, and added the Corso Como Rhonda boots in my usual size.

What did I end up keeping? Well, my giant calves decided for me. Franco is just a wee bit too small for my over-sized calves. (They measure 14.5 inches for the record. Hey, I run a lot!)

The Corso Como Rhonda boots are nearly identical to the Franco Sarto ones, but fit my giant calves. Success!

There you have it. The Great Boot Hunt that was too short, too big, too tight turned out to be just right. And most importantly I have new boots.

Sparkle

While I was continuing my boot saga over the weekend at Nordstrom (ugh yes, The Great Boot Hunt continues--I'll fill you in later), I stumbled over the Vera Wang Luna Flats.

And when I say stumbled, I mean I literally stopped in my tracks and forgot all about The Great Boot Hunt.

Are these not the most gorgeous pair of flats you've ever seen? It looks like someone took a handful of diamonds and clustered them on top of an understated pair of flats. Yes please! They're much more stunning in person. They would probably be even better in my closet!

Gingerbread Squares with Lemon Glaze

The holidays turn me into a baking fiend. There is always some event to attend that needs a pumpkin cookie, pumpkin pie or pumpkin roll. In fact, this weekend I will be making my 6th pumpkin pie of the season for another holiday potluck. Thank god my boyfriend likes pumpkin pie!

This past weekend I broke away from my pumpkin mold and turned to another favorite holiday flavor and baked gingerbread squares with lemon glaze. Delicious, easy and slightly unexpected.

Gingerbread Squares with Lemon Glaze
I took the easy way out and-GASP!-used Trader Joe's gingerbread cake mix. But it worked like a charm!

Cake
- Trader Joe's gingerbread cake mix
- One egg
- Water and vegetable oil according to the box instructions
- Lemon zest

Mix and bake the cake according to the box instructions. I added the zest of one lemon as well. Let cool before adding glaze.

Lemon Glaze
- 2 lemons
- Powdered Sugar

Mix the zest of one lemon and the juice of one lemon with powdered sugar. How much or little powdered sugar you use will depend on how runny or stiff you want your glaze. I didn't measure, but I think I used around a cup of sugar to one and a half lemons. Add glaze to cake, let cool and cut. Enjoy!

Fall is here, like it or not. And since I found myself wandering through Trader Joe's buying gingerbread cake mix while wearing riding boots and this blouse, I'll take that as a sign that I'm ready for autumn weather. When it comes to accessorizing in the cooler weather, I like to stock up on my favorite fall accessory: the scarf. Chunky, wool, square, thin and embroidered, I love them all.

And this one from Anthropologie currently has my heart. It's perfect for weather that's on the crisp side but not cold. And a great addition to an outfit that needs just a bit of color. (Or for me, to make a white long sleeve tee look less like a white long sleeve tee).

There's a thin line when decorating your cubicle between over-personalizing and adding just a touch of yourself to the space. I am constantly searching for that happy medium, and I think I stay on the safe side of the line with a few black and white photos of family and friends and a small watercolor. Although lately I've been craving a little bit more color in my space. Calendars are definitely a good way to add something fun, without going overboard.

Once in a while in during my sprees to find the cutest item for the best price, I come across almost two identical items (one I've had a crush one and one for much cheaper).

Case in point, Anthropologie's Slow Chill Skimmers.

At a whopping almost $200 for a pair of flats, I would sadly have to pass these up. Even though they're super cute, would make a great basic and, who doesn't love an over-sized bow?! (I do! I do!)

But much to my excitement I stumbled up the Rocket Dog Women's Magnum Fancy File Ballet Flat for a total of.... drum roll....$36.95.

I must admit, while I try to drag boyfriend and friends to every restaurant within walking distance of my apartment and office, I rarely make a point to explore the little boutiques in Alexandria, VA.

But I'm going to make a point to change that this weekend. As I was scrolling through all of the web sites I have bookmarked, from rugs to recipes, I discovered the Old Town Boutique District link. (Am I the only one who bookmarks everything and then forgets about it?). This weekend is the 3rd Annual Scavenger Hunt. I'm running a half marathon this Sunday, so what better way to relax before running a few miles than to leisurely shop?

The Autumn Debate

Any previous posts that may have indicated that I was excited for cooler weather, well, I am mentally retracting all of that right now. So just pretend I didn't post anything about warm, fuzzy, cozy clothing. I am not excited. I want summer back. It's overcast and has just reached the 75 degree mark today, but I swear by my J.Crew striped boat neck long-sleeve tee and AG trouser jeans, that it does not FEEL 75 degrees.We are in the middle of an early September chill people! My thin summer blood cannot go from 90 degrees to 60 degrees in a week!

And so I am on a solo journey to convince summer to come back. I'm not ready for long sleeves! Or slacks! And most of all, I refuse to even think about buying tights yet.

Le sigh. But if I must think about long sleeves, jackets, wool and corduroy, then I will just stare at the following two beautiful coats from Anthropologie.

End of Summer Blackberry Cake

When I read this recipe for the easiest cake ever, I honestly thought, there's no WAY it's that easy. Making a cake usually takes up all of my meager counter space and creates a countless amount of dishes (which are then shoved into my teeny weeny dishwasher).

But honestly, the cake WAS easy and took about ten minutes to whip up. Best part? ONE BOWL. That's right, you don't have to re-read that sentence. It's a one-bowl cake (kinda like a one-dish meal). I followed the recipe exactly, except I used blackberries instead of strawberries. I'm already imaging this cake being delicious with almost every fall fruit: pear, apple, raspberry... you get the point. And topped off with vanilla bean ice cream, it's probably going to be a dream.

Well, maybe this first one won't since my oven gets so hot that the edges were starting to brown after 40 minutes of baking. Ugh. My oven. But that's a story for another day.

Perfect way to celebrate end of summer

This cake could possibly be my go-to when it comes to bringing a dessert. I have yet to find my signature dessert dish.

But if you're looking for baking made easy, try this recipe 'cuz it's really that easy.

Mushroom and Couscous Soup

I'm off for a few days to soak up the last rays of summer and to take a little bit of a break before my work goes into full gear until mid-October. Usually when I have a few days off I find myself in the kitchen baking and cooking everything my hectic schedule doesn't normally allow me to do.

Recently I found myself with a ton of leftover mushrooms and chicken broth from making chicken paprikash. What to do with a bunch of leftover mushrooms and chicken broth? Well, you could make a ton of egg omelets smeared with fresh goat cheese (which has been my dinner up until now and is really delicious). But that doesn't solve your chicken broth problem. Or, you could use that Israeli couscous you have hanging out and whip up a little mushroom and couscous soup, in anticipation of cooler weather.

And that is exactly what I did. It's a simple soup, kind of a knock off of chicken noodle soup, sans all the veggies and of course, the chicken. But it's really good, and takes about 20 minutes to whip up.

Mushroom and Couscous Soup

- Package of fresh mushrooms (I used about 2/3 of a package of sliced white mushrooms, but could've used more)
- 3/4 cup of Israeli couscous
- 4 cups of chicken stock (veggie broth would probably work well too)
- Basil (I used 2 cubes of the frozen basil I buy at Trader Joe's. While I've been able to keep a peace lily alive for 5 months, I haven't tried to grow basil yet. So this is my cheater method.)
- Salt and Pepper to taste
- Splash of hot sauce

Bring chicken stock to boil, and add couscous and mushrooms. Season with basil, salt, pepper and hot sauce to your liking. Cook until the couscous is ready and you're ready to enjoy a steaming bowl of mushroom and couscous soup. Makes four servings.

Seriously, it's that easy.

Seriously, September 1? What happened to summer? I think I was just beginning to really take in all of summer, and whoosh, it's leaving.

In its place arrives new fall fashions. I was browsing the new Anthro catalog recently and thought, is it just me or does the September Anthropologie catalog look a lot like what Ralph Lauren has been doing forever? Maybe the horses are throwing me off, but is it possible that preppy countryside is the new fall look?

'Cuz if that's the case then I'm in love.

I am on serious shoe kick and Anthropologie's new line of fall pumps and flats only makes me wish my paycheck could stretch farther than I already push it. Let's take a tour of my favorites, shall we?

I just bought the Rising Starlet Flats and they're a dream. They run a size too small (order up!), but I can tell I'm going to wear them all the time once the bigger size arrives.

The Lamp Saga & The Reason I Would be a Starving Artist

So I may have mentioned about eight times a new lamp that I bought to replace a do-it-yourself job that went horribly, horribly wrong. I won't share what the lamp looks like now. It's slightly embarrassing. However, that lamp is the reason I would be a starving artist if I ever got the whim to quit my job and set up camp selling crafty items (which will never happen, especially after this debacle). It's a little on the ugly side. And so, as my ever-wise boyfriend suggested in the first place, I went out and bought a new lamp.

You're probably wondering why on earth I spoiled a nice lamp in the first place. And the answer is because that corner of my apartment was a little bland, a little too dark, and being the thrifty apartment decorator that I see myself to be, I thought "I'll just paint the lamp and re-cover the shade!" Welp, re-covering a lamp shade is slightly more difficult than it looks on YouTube.

Lesson learned. Sometimes craft projects work, other times, it's just better to leave it to HomeGoods. (And once again my dreams to be a spray-paint artist have been smashed. Such is life.)

Your Inner Kid

I was a pony lover, My Little Ponies to be exact, when I was a kid. I would carry those things everywhere (and subsequently lose them). Barbies and dolls, I just didn't get excited about. But ponies, geez I dreamed of having my own pony farm. What kid doesn't?

I now dream of having a shoe farm, or rather a closet full of racks and racks of beautiful shoes. So when I came across these flats a few days ago it was instant love. The upper is made out of pony hair and finished off with a sparkly purple jewel--just the color my room in high school was painted. (I'm sure somewhere, somebody's calling me inhumane for loving shoes made from animal hair.) The purple jewel just sets the tone for a basic flat that speaks to my inner kid. There's no way you could have a bad day wearing these shoes.

I think I just might have to treat myself. Call it a delayed birthday present.

Nail Polish in 60 Seconds

Do you know what I hate the most about getting my nails done (or in reality, doing them myself)? The waiting. The careful shuffling around while your nails dry, trying not to touch anything and mess up your new nail color when... crap, you touch something.

In a pinch this weekend I picked up Sally Hansen Insta-Dri nail polish. It seriously dries in 60 seconds, which is fantastic when you have to paint your nails, put on your dress, heels and prep your clutch all at the same time. It's day-3 and the polish has started to chip, but in a pinch, this is a great polish to try. Especially if multi-tasking is your middle name.

A Getaway

It's been one heck of a 24 hours, with a ridiculous storm blowing through Alexandria (and the eye of the storm creating a little war zone in my little town of Del Ray) and knocking down trees and power lines everywhere. I still don't have power and they don't expect my condo to get power until next week...

Which only adds to my excitement about getting away this weekend to watch one of my good friends from college get hitched in Virginia Beach. I've been looking forward to this wedding for a year and I could not be happier for my friend and soon to be husband. Plus, this is the perfect opportunity to catch up with lots of other friends!

Kate Spade Does It Again

Kate Spade just combined two of my favorite things in the world: books and purses with the new book clutch.

I am a huuuuuuuuuuge bookworm, so you'll rarely see me without a book (or these days, my Kindle).

And these book clutches are just so cute they would add so much character to any outfit. My favorite? The Great Gatsby. Which one would you take home with you?

Who Knew Dish Racks Could Be... Cute?

Personally, my dish rack is so u.g.l.y., it has a great little spot under the sink where it hides and never comes out. However, this precious dish rack from ModCloth would make the cut and proudly be displayed on my counter.

HomeGoods Happy

I'm convinced that you can find just about anything at HomeGoods (Except for picture frames. Seriously HomeGoods, you're lacking in that area.)

That "anything" includes lamps, pie dishes, a new grill pan and above all, a look-alike Pottery Barn tray that I had seriously been coveting.

The tray I had my heart set on:

I know what you're thinking. "Danielle the Pottery Barn tray is just some crazy seagrass woven find-anywhere tray." I know this, but you can't question the contents of my heart. It knows what it wants, and it wanted some kind of natural element to sit on my coffee table and hold magazines and such.

But I just couldn't force myself to spend $40 + shipping on the tray. And so I resorted to my fall-back for whenever I fall in love with some kind of designer furniture item and just can't afford it (okay, I can afford $40, but not on a tray). I headed to HomeGoods.

And the treasure I found for $10. It took me about three seconds to throw it in my cart, next to my new lamp. It's happily sitting on my coffee table holding all of my coffee table goodies:

And cheesy as it sounds, that tray is why I'm HomeGoods Happy.

Gumdrops

I've mentioned before that my jewelry repertoire is fairly simple. However, once in a while I fall in love with a piece of costume jewelry. Case in point, the Anthropologie Gumdrop Necklace.

I'm not sure what draws me to this piece more: the name of the necklace (gumdrops make me think CandyLand--how fun!) or the bunches of color all packed into a tiny area for one big statement. Perhaps its the whole package deal. But whatever the reason, this necklace needs to make its way into my jewelry box soon!

I had a few days off recently and aside from lounging by the pool and hunting down pottery barn look-alike coffee table trays at HomeGoods, I productively also finished a few projects.

One of them was the lamp project I shared with you the other day. I took both lamps (and you'll see a third lamp that went horribly wrong and is now replaced by one from HomeGoods) and taped up all the parts I didn't want spray painted.

The color: Iris Blue

I mentioned that I was a little shaky about the color and fully anticipated hating it and having to find another color. However, after two coats and a few hours of drying, I was surprised how much I liked the color! I was also surprised at how easy spray painting is! I am never picking up a paint brush again! (kidding)

And the results:

And that's it. Breathing new life into cheap lamps: easy peasey lemon squeezy.

The only kicker is that on my HomeGoods visit (post spray painting) I found those exact lamps IN BLUE. Ugh.

Summer Sales!

I'm not sure about you, but I'm never quite ready for autumn when retailers start rolling our their fall merchandise in the middle of summer. It always makes me feel like the days of wearing sundresses and flips flops is way too close to being over--and it feels like it just began!

However, I do love summer sales, mega summer sales, I'm talking summer sales that will make you glad you held out on that cute color block dress. Which takes me to exhibit A:

Sneak Peak: Gone Crafty

I've never thought of myself as a perfectionist, but I'm constantly moving around items in my apartment, trying to achieve the perfect look (on a teeny budget). Usually when I've finished one project, I'm already dreaming up a new one. I'm currently working on a few projects (warning to anyone who drops by and sees cans of spray paint, paper, fabric, and glue hanging out in a corner), but there's one I'd like to give you a preview of.

Recently I fell in love with two lamps at TJ Maxx for $20 each (They were originally $40! I'm a Maxanista!). Although I'm not in love with the color of the base, I figured nothing a little spray paint couldn't help!

Okay, so the color isn't terrible, but it doesn't match anything in my apartment (except for the fantastic dresser and nightstand from my grandparent's basement--which will one day be sanded down and stained a rich medium brown). I'm attempting to tie the two little rooms in my apartment together using the color blue (think cornflower blue or perhaps a lighter shade of aqua if the cornflower is a bust).

This project is planned for later in the week. I'll be sure to keep you all updated on this project and the rest of them!

Brights

I may have mentioned that I'm totally diggin' the brights right now. And thanks to Essie's incredibly vibrant line of nail polish colors, I can keep a semi-permanent pop of color on my nails for days. Looking down at brightly colored nails furiously typing away at tuesday tasks is the perfect antidote for first-day-back-from-vacation blues.
